 A densely populated and industrialized county, Oliveira de Azeméis offers nevertheless an interesting architectural patrimony and the restful scenery of its fertile valley, crossed by the rivers Antuã and Ínsua.
At the seat of the county, it is worth admiring the parish church, from the beginning of the 18th century and consecrated to Saint Michael, and the magnificent 17th-century Casa do Cruzeiro or manor of the Cortes Reais, rising at the heart of Oliveira de Azeméis.
The Park of La-Salette, on the Crasto hill and covered with trees, should also be visited as it is excellent to spend some hours of leisure and also lodges the chapel of the same name, built between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, in Neo-Gothic style.
Cucujães is the largest parish of the county and exhibits monuments and sites of interest, such as the cloister of the Benedictine monastery, with Dorian pillars from the 17th century, the Bica Bridge (14th century) and several manors, such as the houses of Buraco and of Gandarinha.
Pinheiro da Bemposta is another village which deserves a visit, with a magnificent stone cross from 1604 which has been declared a national monument and the ancient Town Hall, jail and pillory at the historical centre.
In terms of handicrafts, Oliveira de Azeméis offers works in copper and glass, basketry and the typical striped bags of Cucujães, made with interwoven strips of felt and wood laths.
Local gastronomical specialities include roast kid and veal, lamb in the Fajões fashion and the well-known queijadinhas de cenoura (carrot and cheese tartlets) of Oliveira de Azeméis.
